Killzone and Infamous are probably the closest, and they do hold up pretty damn well vs high end, expensive PC gaming, but it's still early days. Sure, they have varying memory bandwidth, clockspeeds, but transistor count is really nice and clean and simple, and roughly accurate +/- 20% or so.īy this metric, (and carmacks 2x the performance number) a game optimized for PS4 could put out visuals approximately equivalent to the R9 290x, a huge (literally, pic) loud, expensive graphics card in high end epensive PC's.īut, the game will of course have to be very optimized on PS4, we haven't really seen many games yet that are. Transistor count is a very good approximate judge of how well a graphics card can perform. The PS4 GPU has approximately 2.8 billion transistors.Ī high end PC graphics card, the R9 290X has 6.2 billion transistors. GTA5 did fantastic things for a last generation game by just focusing on PS3 and Xbox 360.īut as for the potential of PS4 doing Ultra graphics, keep this tweet in mind. Lets not forget, the truly best looking games last generation at the time of release were generally single platform focus on release - God of War, Gears of War, Uncharted 2, Crysis, etc. Yeah, I don't believe it, but not because I don't think it's possible, but I think when developing for a lot of platforms you don't get time for sufficient optimization on any one individual platform.
